About the Workshop:
Dr. Brenda J. Allen, former Chief Diversity Officer for the University of Colorado Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campus, will lead a three-day workshop exploring race in 2020. The workshop will involve discussions about what race is and why it matters, why race is relevant to everyone, and practices for addressing racism.

Day 1: Monday, August 17th, 5:00pm MT - What is Race and Why Does it Matter?

  • Define race
  • Explain how race is a social construction
  • Describe the history of race in the United States
  • Cite reasons why race persists as a critical issue

Day 2: Wednesday, August 19th, 5:00pm MT - Why is Race Relevant to Everyone?

  • Define racism and anti-racism
  • Clarify why race is a social identity category
  • Explain how we all are socialized to enact race
  • Describe dynamics of interracial communication

Day 3: Friday, August 21st, 5:00pm MT - So What? Now What?

  • Summarize lessons learned
  • Explore ways to apply lessons learned
  • Describe promising practices for addressing racism
  • Guide participants to develop a personal anti-racism plan

Brenda J. Allen (PhD, Professor Emerita) is a former Chief Diversity Officer (University of Colorado Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campus). She has developed a track record for scholarship, leadership, teaching, service, mentorship, and training related to organizational communication, diversity, inclusion, and equity. She has worked tirelessly to promote more inclusive, humane, and equitable communication and professional practices. As a consultant, Dr. Allen offers workshops, facilitations, and keynote speeches on topics such as inclusive leadership, inclusion in the workplace, racism and anti-racism, strategic planning, implicit bias, and diversity recruitment/retention practices. Among her numerous publications is a groundbreaking book entitled Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity (Waveland Press).
