Dispatch Radio: A Conversation Between Florence Williams and Tracy Ross

Join Boulder Book Store and Dispatch Radio for this conversation between Florence Williams and Tracy Ross on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:30pm!

About the Event:
As longtime magazine writers and journalists, both Florence Williams and Tracy Ross have seen — and had — their share of adventures while telling stories that matter through the lens of the outdoors and outdoor sports. As contributing editor and podcaster for Outside Magazine, Williams has reported on ultra-runners, ultra-simmers and sex-trafficking survivors trying to heal in the wilderness. Ross has written for Outside, Backpacker, Bicycling, Ski and many other publications since she moved to Colorado in 1998 and decided that if she was going to be a poor but happy ski bum, she might as well try making a living writing — her other true love. Now, two decades later, both can be found reporting big, thorny stories in locales near and far. Both have also written books that grew out of their reporting, including Williams’s The Nature Fix and Ross’s The Source of All Things. They both love to talk about their journeys into writing, the bodies of work they have built, how they’ve transitioned magazine stories into books, and what it’s like to be a female outdoor writer in a world still largely dominated by men. Join us to hear them discuss these things and more — and read from their work.

About Florence Williams:
Florence Williams is a journalist, author, and podcaster. She is a contributing editor at Outside Magazine and a freelance writer for The New York TimesNational Geographic, and numerous other publications. She is also the writer and host of two Audible Original series, "Breasts Unbound" and "The Three-Day Effect." Her first book, BREASTS: A Natural and Unnatural History received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in science and technology. Her second book, The Nature Fix: How Nature Makes us Happier, Healthier and More Creative, was a Boulder Book Store bestseller.  The Wall Street Journal calls her writing “droll and crisp,” which makes her feel like a pastry. A former Coloradoan, Florence serves on the boards of High Country News and CU’s Center for Environmental Journalism. She currently lives with her family in Washington, D.C.

About Tracy Ross:
Tracy Ross is a National Magazine Award winner and the author of The Source of All Things, a memoir about her attempt to forgive her stepfather for years of childhood sexual abuse through strength she gained in the outdoors and outdoor sports. Her work has appeared in Outside, Backpacker, Bicycling, Ski, Popular Science, Glamour, and many other publications and her stories have appeared in Best American Sports Writing and Best American Magazine Writing. She is currently at work on big magazine stories she hopes will matter and a book of essays about raising her three kids close to the ground and in a life full of risk, because of her desire to stay alive, happy, and in a state of wonder via the closest contact she can get with the earth and through an endless stream of medium-core, "risky" adventures.

Vouchers to attend are $5 and are good for $5 off a featured book or a purchase the day of the event. Vouchers can be purchased now at the store, over the phone, or at the door. Readers Guild Members can reserve seats for any in-store event.
